The garment industry accounts for approximately US$ 4.6 billion in export earnings in 2012. It is the Kingdom of Cambodia’s third highest‐earning industry and the largest formal sector employer with more than 35,000 workers employed in approximately 425 export factories. These workers sustain an estimated two million through remittances sent home by workers to their families.
Since 2001, Better Factories Cambodia (BFC) has worked to improved working conditions in Cambodia‘s export garment factories through independent assessments, training and advisory service provided to factory management. BFC has conducted thousands of monitoring visits to factories since commencing operations. The program has been credited with increasing compliance with national and international labour standards.
