Summary
Established in 1991, Khemara was the very first local Non-Government Organization (NGO) in Cambodia. Since its inception, Khemara has played a significant role in working for the advancement of women and children in Cambodia by working directly with communities.
Khemara’s mission is to promote the capacity, self-confidence and wellbeing of the community through the sharing of information, education and counseling.
Job context
In partnership with Every Child UK and Legal Aid Cambodia, Khemara will commence a 3 year project aimed to ensure that children in three provinces of south-eastern Cambodia are able to exercise their civil and political rights in the Cambodian justice systems and in their communities. By strengthening systems and increasing the knowledge and skills of duty bearers at the national, provincial, district and commune level, the project will ensure children are aware of their rights, receive preventative support when vulnerable and receive appropriate protection, legal advice and support when they are in the justice system, whether they are in conflict with the law or are victims of crime/abuse.
Khemara will work with children, families and local duty-bearers, including members of Commune Councils for Women and Children (CCWC) and Women and Children’s Consultative Committee (WCCC) in Memut - Kampong Cham, Svay Antor - Prey Veng, and Svay Teab - Svay Rieng to strengthen community-based child protection processes in line with government guidelines. By identifying vulnerable children and supporting duty bearers and parents to take preventative action, the project will keep 350 vulnerable girls and boys safe, and prevent them from coming into contact with the law. Children’s and carers’ clubs will be set up in the first year and supported to function independently by the end of the project. These will enable children and their carers to be proactive in learning about their rights and taking action to ensure children are safe and protected in their communities.
