KYA Background
Khmer Youth Association (KYA) is a membership-based, humanitarian, non-political party, non-governmental and non-partisan Cambodian youth organization founded in 1992. KYA is committed to working with and for youth for positive social change by improving and promoting youth participation on different social issues relevant to Cambodia. KYA strives toward an improved framework for respecting human rights, democracy, gender equality, health and the empowerment of young people by the government and other stakeholders, utilizing principles that encourage youth participation and recognize youth’s role.
Vision: Youth in Cambodia are educated, healthy and empowered as active citizens, whose voice is respected and valued as an essential contribution towards the Kingdom’s increasing social and economic prosperity.
Mission: To enable youth in rural and urban areas to influence policies and take action on the key issues affecting their development in order that they may realize their full potential and contribute to a positive future for the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Through financial and technical support from International Institute of the IOGT-NTO Movement (III) in. KYA has implemented drug and alcohol prevention among youth in four different areas ; Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambong and Banteay Mean Chey.
Project Background
Drug Awareness and Prevention among Youth (DAP)
The Drug Awareness program was piloted in the year 2003 in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh targeting youth. After the pilot period ended, the project has been implemented since 2004 in three additional target provinces in the western part of the country. Reaching the target youth successfully, the project was enlarged to totally six target areas--Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Pailin, Kandal and Phnom Penh.
1. Overall Objective: Youth in Cambodian society accept as an important role in drug, alcohol and tobacco (DAT) prevention, for social positive development of the country.
2. Project Purpose: Youth in the communities can deal successfully with drug related and other problems in their environment.
Results:
Result 1: Youth development and empowerment have increased the chances that youth in the selected areas are avoiding undesirable behaviours related to DAT and their consequences.
Result 2: Youth for Youth” initiatives are accepted by adults in the communities.
Result 3: Youth club and CBOs are strengthened and functioned to ensure the sustainability of the awareness raising activities.
Target groups: there are three main target groups:
1. Primary target group: The project will reach Young People age 12-25 years old include 69% of youth in the schools and 25% of youth in the community of the total project participants. Youth in the community will be included the vulnerable group such as drop out school children, child/youth labourers, street children, unemployed youth and child/youth regardless to sex.
2. Secondary target group: The 6% of individuals and groups who have an influential role on the lifestyle development of young people such as parents, teachers, social workers, health professionals and authorities will be reached.
3. Project staffs: field staffs, provincial coordinators, project assistant and project coordinator are contributes to the project result.
4. Project Duration: Year 2010 - 2012
